This Day in Wells Fargo HistoryApril 16, 1866

A wood crate arrived at Wells Fargo’s San Francisco office for further inspection. As a worker used hammer and chisel to open it, an explosion blew apart the building and killed a dozen people. The unidentified contents of the crate? Nitroglycerin.
